For those who are wondering, I'm going to be tracking scoring chances for the Colorado Avalanche this season so this post will hopefully be the first of many.

Although the Avalanche were outchanced by a wide margin on "Joe Sakic night" much of the discrepancy came in the third period when the Avalanche had already established a three-goal lead and many of those chances came while the Avalanche were short-handed. Nonetheless, the results at even strength will need to improve if Colorado hopes to win many more games. Their saving grace may be their power play where the Avalanche were very good at generating chances: eight chances in eight minutes including a power play goal is certainly something to build on going forward. When I wrote about the Ryan Smyth trade in the off-season I mentioned how well Kyle Quincey performed for the Kings PP last season. If he can put in a similar performance in Colorado the Avalanche will have a chance to make up some of their shortfall at EV on special teams.

Matt Duchene is a very exciting hockey player. He had two memorable moments in this game where he looked like one of the most skilled players on the ice. The first was when he completely blew by a defender and cut in for a nice chance on net and the second was a penalty-killing chance he created with some strong forechecking and nifty stickhandling. He's going to be really fun to watch this season, but it's important not to go overboard. In the intermission Keith Jones remarked, "When you have a guy like Matt Duchene in your lineup you can do without Ryan Smyth." All I can say is, hopefully Keith Jones becomes the general manager of a non-Oilers NHL team (maybe even the Avalanche!). That's not to say that I would trade Matt Duchene for Ryan Smyth. Not at all. But the idea that Matt Duchene can replace everything that Ryan Smyth does this season is crazy. Evidence that Joe Sacco agrees can be seen in Duchene's ice time at EV (noted above). He's still a kid and that's something commentators and fans alike should keep in mind when coming up with expectations for their new center this year.

Thanks, Scott.

Have you let the blogging Avalanche fans know that you are doing this? There are a few of them that are into the analytical stuff, I'm sure that they would appreciate it.

I haven't yet but I'll drop a line to the folks at Mile High Hockey and see if they're interested in what's going on. Thanks again for the scoring chance app Vic. It's great.
