This was a pretty uninspiring effort from the Avalanche with the exception of their work on the PK. The Blackhawks were playing the second half of a back-to-back and had travelled into Denver from Phoenix the night before. This means that the Avalanche have a much better chance of winning the game and, presumably because they should be outchancing their opponents. Instead, the Avalanche were outchanced 18-11 at EV and didn't get even one EV chance in the second period. This marks yet another game where, when the Avs are playing a quality opponent, they aren't able to get the better of the chances.

The PK, though, was great. Granted, they got scored on, but they also got a goal and really limited the Hawks on the few occasions they had the extra man. A big contributor on the PK was Ryan O'Reilly who also had his first two-goal game in the NHL. Although he wasn't phenemonal in this game he's held up much better than 18-year-old teammate Matt Duchene in terms of EV scoring chances (though Corsi says the exact opposite with Duchene at -13.8/60 and O'Reilly at -20.3/60). There was a bit of a funny comment from the Avalanche broadcast team about O'Reilly though. They said something to the effect of "He's not loading up in the third period when the Avs are up 5 to 1." Um... of course not? The Avalanche have had a four-goal lead exactly 0 times so far this season. So yeah. The idea that O'Reilly isn't wasting his goal production on "small goals" is dumb.

On the whole, this was another Avalanche victory where the other team controlled play. How long can this kind of thing go on? I'm not sure but I wouldn't bet on a whole season of it. That said, this nice long run has set the Avs up nicely for the battle for 7th and 8th that they're now sure to be a part of come March and April.
