Well, the number of times you allow four power play goals and still win the game isn't very high. Some of it was bad luck (that first PP goal off an Avalanche stick right to Comrie), some of it bad execution (the Oilers made the same cross-seam pass twice in a row within about ten seconds; they fanned on the first one, but made no mistake on the second) but the PK was what killed the Avs last night after several games of stellar play. That they took a delay of game penalty and two bench minors didn't help matters any. The other side of the special teams wasn't much help either as the Avs not only didn't score on the PP but only had a chance differential of +0.375 per minute compared to +0.306 per minute at EV.

And that's the takeaway for Avs fans in this game. Much like their last game against the Oilers, the Avalanche dominated at EV. The output in the third period was pretty poor compared to the first two but in all three periods the Avalanche had more chances at EV. And that's encouraging. I've heard some talk that the Avs had an "off game" but really they just had an unlucky one. I think a lot of Avs fans are getting luck and carrying the play confused since so many of their games have been similar to this one but with the roles reversed, i.e., the Avs are outplayed but come out with the win anyway. That's not being skilled. That's being lucky. But the Avs aren't all luck. Although they've been routinely outchanced by the good teams in the Western Conference (Chicago, Detroit, San Jose), they've been able to outplay weaker ones like the Oilers. So long as Milan Hejduk isn't out for an extended period of time, there's no good reason to believe that trend won't continue and given their head start in the standings, outplaying the bad teams might just be enough to get them into the post-season.
